EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative pen and wash drawing depicts the pivotal Battle of Talavera, which took place on July 28, 1809, during the Peninsular War (1808-1814). The battle took place near the town of Talavera la Real in Spain, and saw the combined forces of the British and Spanish armies under the command of General Sir Arthur Wellesley (later the Duke of Wellington) and General Castaños facing off against the French army led by Marshal Soult. The engagement was significant as it marked the first major victory for the Allied forces against the French during the Peninsular War. The scene captured in this drawing shows the intense and chaotic nature of the battlefield, with soldiers from both sides locked in fierce combat, artillery pieces belching smoke, and the dust raised by the clashing armies obscuring the view. The determination and courage of the soldiers on both sides are palpable, as they fought for control of the strategic high ground. This beautiful and detailed artwork, created by E. Walker, provides a captivating glimpse into the past, transporting us back to the heat of the battle and the heroism of the soldiers who fought there.
