EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking portrait, we see Antonio Barberini (1608-1671), an Italian cardinal who held the prestigious position of archbishop of Reims in France during the mid-17th century. The image, captured around 1650, showcases Barberini in his ecclesiastical robes, adorned with intricate embroidery and a red hat signifying his cardinalate status. His piercing gaze and serious expression convey a sense of authority and importance. Born into the influential Barberini family of Rome, Antonio's path to the Church was likely influenced by his powerful relatives, including his uncle, Pope Urban VIII. After studying law and theology, he was ordained a priest and eventually rose through the ranks to become a cardinal in 1644. In 1652, he was appointed archbishop of Reims, a position that placed him at the heart of French religious and political affairs. During his tenure in Reims, Barberini played a significant role in the religious and cultural life of the city. He oversaw the construction of the grand Palais du Tau, which housed the coronation regalia and served as the archbishop's residence. He also supported the arts, commissioning works from renowned artists such as Jacques Stella and Pierre Mignard. Despite his close ties to the French court, Barberini remained loyal to the Pope and the Roman Catholic Church. He played a key role in the papal election of 1655, which saw the election of Pope Alexander VII. After his death in 1671, he was buried in the stunning Basilique Saint-Remi in Reims, a fitting resting place for a man who had dedicated his life to the Church and played a crucial role in its history. This portrait of Antonio Barberini offers a glimpse into the life of an influential Italian cardinal who left his mark on the religious and cultural landscape of France during the 17th century.
