EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Kazasker Judge, one of the two highest military judges in the Ottoman Empire. Serving on the Imperial Council, alongside the grand vizier, they held immense responsibility for administering justice throughout the empire. Originally accompanying the sultan on military campaigns, these judges represented the court's judiciary and were divided into two regions: Rumeli (European part) and Anadolu (Asian part). Although their power began to decline in the eighteenth century with some of their duties being assumed by other officials such as Seyh ul Islam and the grand vizier, their striking appearance remained impressive. Adorned with a magnificent large turban and donning fur-trimmed kaftans, they exuded an air of authority. The artist behind this masterpiece is Jean Baptiste Vanmour who captured this historical moment between 1727 and 1730. The canvas painting depicts a standing figure wearing traditional headgear associated with magistracy and judging roles. While specific names are not known for these historical figures portrayed in this artwork, their significance within Turkish history cannot be understated. This print from Liszt Collection allows us to appreciate both its artistic beauty and its representation of an important era in Turkey's judicial system
