EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the iconic Burton store located at 22-24 Old Market in Halifax, Calderdale, West Yorkshire. The image captures the viewer's attention as they look up at the majestic center of the west-facing Princess Street elevation. A central relief carving proudly displays Burton's distinctive logo, symbolizing their esteemed presence in the retail industry. The historical significance of this building is highlighted by its foundation stones being laid in 1932 by Arnold James Burton, Raymond Montague Burton, and Stanley Howard Burton. Over time, this remarkable establishment has been home to various businesses including McDonald's. Notably, stylized elephant heads grace the pilasters between first and second-floor windows - a recurring motif found in many other architecturally stunning Burton stores designed around 1931-1932. The art deco influence on this corner site is evident through its geometric design elements and exquisite stone carvings. The blue hues add an enchanting touch to the overall aesthetic appeal of this photograph. It is important to note that while this image represents Burtons' legacy in fashion and tailoring for men, it does not specifically mention any commercial use or affiliation with the company itself. Nicholas Anthony John Philpot skillfully captures both the grandeur and intricate details of this historic landmark through his lens. This print serves as a testament to not only architectural brilliance but also to our shared cultural heritage within bustling high streets like Halifax's Old Market district.
