EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Quintin Banderas, a prominent figure in Cuban history during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born in Santiago de Cuba in 1834, Banderas played a crucial role in both wars of Independencia, fighting for his country's freedom. However, his dedication to the cause led to his deportation to Spain in 1879. Intriguingly, this image captures Banderas during the 1920s when he was already an iconic leader. Dressed impeccably in military uniform with a distinguished hat atop his head, he exudes strength and determination. The monochrome setting adds depth to the portrait while emphasizing the historical significance of this influential man. Banderas' legacy is further highlighted by his audacious act of walking from Mariel to Majana in 1896 as a way of mocking Spanish troops' vigilance. This daring feat solidified him as a symbol of resistance against colonial rule. Sadly, Quintin Banderas passed away in 1906 but not before leaving an indelible mark on Cuban history. This cigar card from "History of Cuba" pays homage to this remarkable individual who fought tirelessly for independence and became an emblematic leader for generations to come.
