Nanticoke Dam, 1874. Creator: John Filmer

Nanticoke Dam, 1874. The Susquehanna River at Nanticoke, Pennsylvania, USA....Nanticoke, where the river expands considerably, becoming very shallow. Here there is a dam erected for the lumberers, though the business is yearly decreasing in this part. There are on the southern side broad stretches of fertile land below the bank, and these are cultivated with profit - principally for the raising of tobacco. From " Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In, A Delineation by Pen and Pencil of the Mountains, Rivers, Lakes...with Illustrations on Steel and Wood by Eminent American Artists" Vol. II, edited by William Cullen Bryant. [D. Appleton and Company, New York, 1874]

Nanticoke Dam, 1874 - A Glimpse into the Changing Landscape of Nanticoke, Pennsylvania

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures the essence of Nanticoke Dam in 1874, as seen through the lens of John Filmer. Located on the expansive Susquehanna River in Pennsylvania, USA, this dam served as a vital hub for lumberers during that time. However, even then it was evident that the once-thriving lumber business was gradually declining in this part of Nanticoke. The river's widening here resulted in shallower waters, making it less suitable for extensive logging activities. Nevertheless, remnants of its former glory can still be observed within this picturesque scene. On one side of the dam lies vast stretches of fertile land below its banks - a testament to nature's generosity and human ingenuity. These lands were cultivated with great success primarily for tobacco farming. The image evokes a sense of tranquility amidst an evolving landscape where man and nature coexist harmoniously. Taken from "Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In" edited by William Cullen Bryant and featuring illustrations by renowned American artists such as John Filmer himself, this wood engraving transports us back to a defining era in American history. As we gaze upon this remarkable piece capturing both natural beauty and human endeavor intertwined along the Susquehanna River valley at Nanticoke Creek, we are reminded not only of our past but also how landscapes evolve over time – forever shaping our cultural heritage.
