Mother Shipton (1488-c1560) prophesying the death of Cardinal Wolsey
Mother Shipton (1488-c1560) English witch and prophetess, prophesying the death of Cardinal Wolsey. Ursula Sonthiel Shipton lived in Yorkshire and told fortunes and made predictions concerning the future. Her best-known prophecy concerned Cardinal Wolsey. Wolsey was Archbishop of York, but his involvement with affairs of state in London meant that he never visited the diocese. Mother Shipton predicted that Wolsey would see York but never actually set foot in the city. In 1530 he travelled to York, and glimpsed the city in the distance, but was recalled to London by Henry VIII to face a charge of high treason. He died on the return journey. The first written edition of Mother Shiptons prophecies dates from 1641 however, long after Wolseys death, so it is thought that the prophecy may have been a hoax penned by someone else

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the intriguing tale of Mother Shipton, an English witch and prophetess from the 16th century. In this woodcut image, we see her prophesying the death of Cardinal Wolsey, a prominent figure in Tudor England. Mother Shipton was known for her fortune-telling abilities and predictions about the future. Her most famous prophecy centered around Cardinal Wolsey, who served as Archbishop of York but never set foot in the city due to his involvement with affairs of state in London. Mother Shipton accurately predicted that he would see York but never actually visit it. In 1530, Cardinal Wolsey traveled to York and caught a glimpse of the city from afar before being summoned back to London by Henry VIII on charges of high treason. Tragically, he died during his return journey. Although the first written edition of Mother Shipton's prophecies emerged long after Wolsey's demise, some suspect that this particular prediction may have been a hoax penned by someone else. Nevertheless, this print serves as a fascinating reminder of their intertwined destinies - one as a powerful religious figure and statesman, the other as an enigmatic witch whose words seemed to transcend time itself. Through this monochrome image captured by an unknown creator and preserved by Heritage Images, we are transported back to a period filled with mysticism and intrigue - where religion clashed with superstition and prophecies held great power over people's lives.
