Members of the Peoples Marine Division on the Balcony of the City Palace, December 1918, 1918, (193

Members of the Peoples Marine Division on the Balcony of the City Palace, December 1918, 1918, (1938). The Berlin City Palace the royal and imperial palace in the centre of Berlin. Built in the 15th century and finalised by the middle 18th century, is attributed to German architect Andreas Schluter (1664-1714). Following the defeat and forced abdication of William II (1859-1941) both as German Emperor and as King of Prussia the palace was sacked. In November 1918, the Spartacist leader, Karl Liebknecht (1871-1919), declared the German Socialist Republic from a balcony of the Palace, ending more than 400 years of royal occupation of the building. From These Tremendous Years 1919-1938. [Daily Express, London, 1938]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in history - Members of the Peoples Marine Division standing proudly on the balcony of the City Palace in Berlin, December 1918. The City Palace, an architectural masterpiece attributed to German architect Andreas Schluter, had been a symbol of royal occupation for over four centuries until its sacking following the defeat and forced abdication of William II. In this image, we witness the aftermath of that tumultuous period as Karl Liebknecht, leader of the Spartacist movement, declares the German Socialist Republic from this very balcony. It marks a turning point in Germany's political landscape and signifies more than just a change in power; it represents hope for a new era. The sepia-toned photograph showcases not only the grandeur of the palace's facade but also highlights the resilience and determination etched on these men's faces. They stand united against war and oppression, ready to shape their nation's destiny. As we gaze upon this snapshot frozen in time, we can't help but feel drawn into their world - a world filled with both triumphs and challenges. This image serves as a reminder that even amidst destruction and chaos, there is always room for transformation and progress. From These Tremendous Years 1919-1938: A powerful visual testament to an era marked by revolution, resilience, and renewal.
