EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the majestic Main Gate of Lahore Fort in 1936. The fort, originally built by the Mughal Emperor Akbar the Great in the 1560s, stands as a testament to the architectural brilliance of that era. In this image, we see the grandeur of the gate against a backdrop of lush gardens known as Hazuri Bagh. The pavilion featured in this photograph was added to Lahore Fort much later, in 1818, by Sikh Maharaja Ranjit Singh. Unfortunately, tragedy struck when a lightning strike destroyed its upper storey in 1932. Despite this loss, the gate remains an awe-inspiring sight. The print is sourced from "The Civil and Military Gazette". Annual of 1936, providing us with a glimpse into history through monochrome imagery. It transports us back to an era where intricate fortifications like these were not only symbols of power but also works of art. As we admire this remarkable piece of architecture captured by an unknown creator, it reminds us that heritage transcends time and borders. Lahore Fort's rich history spans centuries and cultures – from its Mughal origins under Akbar to its later additions during Sikh rule. This evocative image invites us to appreciate both the beauty and resilience embodied within historical landmarks such as Lahore Fort's Main Gate.
