Mackay, c1935

Mackay, c1935. Tartan is a pattern consisting of horizontal and vertical bands in multiple colours. Originally these were simply different regional checked-cloth patterns, chosen by the wearers preference without particular reference to propriety. In the mid-nineteenth century, however, many patterns were created and artificially associated with Scottish clans, families, or institutions. Tartans originated in woven wool, but are now made in many other materials in hundreds of patterns. Scottish kilts almost always have tartan patterns. Tartan is often called plaid in North America. Illustration from a book on Scottish tartans, published c1935

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to Mackay, Scotland in the year 1935. The image showcases a traditional tartan pattern, consisting of vibrant horizontal and vertical bands in multiple colors. Tartan patterns were originally chosen based on personal preference without any specific meaning attached to them. However, during the mid-nineteenth century, various patterns were created and artificially linked to Scottish clans, families, or institutions. Tartans have their origins in woven wool but have evolved over time to be crafted from numerous other materials with hundreds of unique designs available today. One cannot help but notice that Scottish kilts almost always feature these distinctive tartan patterns. In North America, tartan is commonly referred to as plaid. This illustration was taken from a book dedicated solely to Scottish tartans published around the same period as this photograph - 1935. The print captures not only the essence of Scotland's rich textile heritage but also provides us with a glimpse into the typical fashion choices prevalent during that era. Although we do not know who specifically captured this moment in time or its purpose beyond historical documentation, it serves as a reminder of Scotland's cultural significance and enduring traditions associated with tartan textiles.
