Historical costume, c1950. Creator: Shirley Markham

Historical costume, c1950. Fashions of the 1910s - illustrations for characters in " The White Peacock" by DH Lawrence: hobble skirts for evening. Shirley Markham (1931-1999) studied Graphic Design and Illustration at Central School of Art in London from 1950-1952. The writer, artist, poet, and illustrator Mervyn Peake (1911-1968) was one of her tutors, and her style of drawing was also influenced by other British illustrators such as Edward Ardizzone, Quentin Blake and Edward Bawden. Markham spent time in the Dolomite Mountains in Italy, and also visited Rome, sketching classical buildings. After graduating from Central, she worked as a graphic designer, producing book illustrations, cartoons for comics, menus and programmes. She gave up her promising career however when she got married in 1957. Middle-class women at that time were expected to devote their energies to bringing up children and running the home, and despite her obvious talent, she lacked the confidence to return to illustration. Her portfolio remained in the family attic for many years, but now her work is published here for the first time

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a historical costume from the 1950s, designed by Shirley Markham. Inspired by the fashions of the 1910s, these illustrations were created for characters in DH Lawrence's novel "The White Peacock". The image depicts elegant hobble skirts specifically tailored for evening wear. Shirley Markham, a talented artist and illustrator, studied Graphic Design and Illustration at London's Central School of Art between 1950 and 1952. During her time there, she had the privilege of being mentored by Mervyn Peake, an accomplished writer, poet, artist, and illustrator himself. Markham's unique drawing style was also influenced by renowned British illustrators like Edward Ardizzone, Quentin Blake, and Edward Bawden. Markham's artistic journey took her to Italy where she spent time in the Dolomite Mountains sketching classical buildings in Rome. After graduating from Central School of Art with great promise as a graphic designer producing book illustrations, cartoons for comics menus and programs; however she made the difficult decision to give up her career when she got married in 1957. During that era middle-class women were expected to focus their energies on raising children and managing household duties. Despite her undeniable talent as an artist though lacking confidence led her to abandon illustration altogether. Her remarkable portfolio remained hidden away in the family attic until now when it is finally published for all to appreciate its beauty once again.
