EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases George Stoneman, a prominent Union cavalry general during the American Civil War. The artist, Brady, skillfully captures Stoneman's commanding presence and military uniform in stunning black and white detail. From 1862 to 1867, General Stoneman led the cavalry corps of the Army of the Ohio with great distinction. However, his legacy was forever marked when he became the highest-ranking Union officer to be captured by Confederate forces at Macon, Georgia in 1864 during the Atlanta Campaign. Despite this setback, Stoneman's resilience and leadership qualities were evident throughout his career. After the war, he transitioned into politics and served as Governor of California from 1883 to 1887. This unexpected trajectory highlights his versatility as both a military strategist and statesman. The engraving featured in this print is sourced from volume III of "The War with the South: A History of the Late Rebellion" by Robert Tomes and Benjamin G Smith. It offers a glimpse into an important era in American history - a time when brave men like George Stoneman fought valiantly for their country's unity. As we reflect on this image today, it serves as a reminder of those who dedicated their lives to preserving our nation's values amidst turmoil.
