Avenue of sacred images after excavation, Karnak, Thebes, Egypt, c1900. Artist: Underwood & Underwood

Avenue of sacred images after excavation, Karnak, Thebes, Egypt, 1905. It was Ramses II who erected this splendid avenue of sphinxes, or really of rams, though they are often called sphinxes. The row on the right is in an unusually good state of preservation, and you observe the statues of the king standing between the protecting forepaws of each ram. The ram was the sacred animal of Amon, the great god of Thebes, hence its use as the exclusive figure in the sculpture along these Theban avenues, thus expressing in an oft-repeated symbol - the gods protection of the king. Stereoscopic card. Detail. From a series called Egypt Through the Stereoscope, text by James H Breasted

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the early 20th century, offering a glimpse into the Avenue of sacred images after excavation in Karnak, Thebes, Egypt. Erected by Ramses II, this magnificent avenue is adorned with statues that are often referred to as sphinxes but are actually rams. On the right side of the row stands an exceptionally well-preserved collection of these statues, with each ram sheltering a statue of the king between its protective forepaws. The choice of using rams instead of traditional sphinxes holds deep religious significance. Amon, the great god of Thebes, was symbolized by this sacred animal. Thus, along these ancient Theban avenues, we witness a powerful expression - the gods' protection bestowed upon their king through repeated symbolism. Captured through stereoscopic photography by Underwood & Underwood for their series "Egypt Through the Stereoscope" this detailed image transports us to a time when Egypt's rich history and spirituality were being unearthed and celebrated. With monochrome tones emphasizing its timeless beauty and heritage value, this photograph invites contemplation on religion and protection in ancient Egyptian culture. As we gaze at this print from Heritage Images today, we can't help but feel blessed to have such tangible connections to our past preserved through artistry and documentation like James H Breasted's insightful text accompanying it. It serves as a reminder that even centuries later, these sacred avenues continue to inspire awe and reverence for Egypt's enduring legacy.
