EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the magnificent Albert Bridge in Manchester, as it stood proudly in 1844. The bridge was a replacement for the previous New Bailey Bridge and spanned across the Irwell River, connecting Bridge Street in Manchester to New Bailey Street in Salford. After serving the public for an impressive 59 years, the old bridge was closed on June 26th of the previous year and completely dismantled. Under the expert guidance of Mr. C. Carrington, bridgemaster of Salford Hundred, this new structure came to life with its remarkable solidity and grandeur. The massive carriage and footways were greatly admired by all who beheld them from both land and water levels. The image itself is an engraving taken from "Illustrated London News" - a prominent newspaper publication during that era. It offers us a glimpse into Victorian England's transportation landscape, showcasing not only this engineering marvel but also several boats gracefully sailing along the river beneath it. Although we do not know who specifically captured this momentous scene, their skillful work has allowed us to appreciate this historical landmark even today. This photograph serves as a testament to Manchester's rich heritage and its continuous efforts towards progress throughout centuries gone by.
