The Accident at St. George's Hospital: the Cistern on the Roof, 1876. Creator: Unknown
The Accident at St. George's Hospital: the Cistern on the Roof, 1876. One of the female patients...died yesterday week from the effects of the shock caused by this extraordinary accident...[she fell through] a hole in the floor being made by the fall of a large piece of the water-tank from the roof. The tank...contained at the time of the accident twenty-five tons of water, or 5000 gallons. The east side of the tank was that which had given way; there was a large jagged hole broken in it...The alarm was first given by a night nurse who was off duty, and happened to see some water trickling down...the superintendent, Mr. Charles Todd...gave orders to clear the waste-pipe, so that the water, which had already formed a pool on the roof, might run off. Suddenly the whole side seemed to come out, and the superintendent and engineer narrowly escaped being swept away'. From "Illustrated London News", 1876

The Accident at St. George's Hospital - the Cistern on the Roof, 1876
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating photograph that documents an extraordinary and tragic event that took place at St. George's Hospital in London over a century ago. The image, taken from an unknown photographer, captures the aftermath of a water tank collapse that occurred on the hospital roof, resulting in the death of one female patient and causing significant alarm among the hospital staff. The incident began when a large piece of the water-tank, containing twenty-five tons of water or 5000 gallons, fell through a hole in the roof, causing a shock to one of the female patients. The patient, unfortunately, died from the effects of the fall and the ensuing panic. The east side of the tank, as evident in the photograph, had given way, leaving a large jagged hole. The first sign of the impending disaster was given by a night nurse who was off duty but happened to notice some water trickling down from the roof. The hospital superintendent, Mr. Charles Todd, was alerted, and he gave orders to clear the waste-pipe to allow the water to drain off the roof. However, just as the instructions were being carried out, the entire side of the tank seemed to come crashing down, putting the superintendent and engineer in grave danger. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the risks and challenges faced by medical professionals during the Victorian era, and the importance of maintaining the safety and integrity of hospital infrastructure. The accident at St. George's Hospital serves as a grim reminder of the potential consequences of neglecting essential maintenance and upkeep. The image, with its haunting depiction of the aftermath, offers a glimpse into the past and the resilience of those who worked in the medical field during a time when such accidents were all too common.
