Salisbury, church St Thomas Becket
St Thomass Church was built around 1220 as a place of worship for the masons working on the nearby 13th-century Salisbury Cathedral. It was rebuilt around 1450 and bears the emblems of the townspeople who paid for it.
The churchs most notable feature is the Last Judgment or " Doom" mural which fills the wall above the chancel arch. Pre-restoration drawings confirm that this composition is original and dates to 1475. The details are similar to other 15th-century murals. The colour has faded quite a bit but it still wonderful to see the mural after so many centuries. The mural was completed in 1475, but was painted over in 1593. It remained hidden until it was discovered and restored in 1881.
The nave and aisles of St. Thomas Church are in the Perpendicular style. The slim pillars are topped with foliated capitals. The clear glass windows overlook the market buildings outside and make the interior bright. The carved timber roof includes crested and painted beams and 250 angels in various locations

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the timeless beauty of Salisbury's St. Thomas Becket Church, a historic place of worship that has stood since the 13th century. Originally built to serve as a sanctuary for the masons constructing nearby Salisbury Cathedral, this church underwent reconstruction in 1450 and proudly displays emblems representing the townspeople who generously funded its restoration. One cannot help but be drawn to the church's most remarkable feature - an awe-inspiring mural known as "The Doom". Dating back to 1475, this masterpiece adorns the wall above the chancel arch and depicts The Last Judgment with intricate details reminiscent of other stunning murals from the 15th century. Although time has faded its colors, witnessing this ancient artwork is truly a wonder that connects us with centuries past. Hidden for nearly three centuries after being painted over in 1593, it was not until its rediscovery and subsequent restoration in 1881 that "The Doom" regained its rightful place within St. Thomas Church. As you explore further into this sacred space, you will find yourself immersed in Perpendicular-style architecture throughout the nave and aisles. Slim pillars adorned with foliated capitals support a carved timber roof featuring crested and painted beams alongside an astonishing array of 250 angels scattered throughout. Angel Villalba's masterful print beautifully encapsulates both the grandeur and delicate intricacies found within St. Thomas Becket Church—a testament to human craftsmanship enduring through generations while inviting us to appreciate history's profound impact on our present day.
