EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "The Golden Bull of Charles IV, Holy Roman Emperor" created in 1400. The artwork is made from vellum and gold and is attributed to the German School of the 14th century. Housed in the State Archives in Vienna, Austria, this particular piece is a copy of the original Golden Bull of 1356 that was specially made for Charles IV's son Wenceslas. The significance of this copy lies in its propaganda value as it was created at the time when Wenceslas was being deposed from his position as Roman King. Despite not accepting his deposition, this document served as a tool to assert his authority and legitimacy. The Golden Bull outlines the constitutional structure and election system for the Holy Roman Empire while also defining the relationship between the emperor and the pope. On its verso side, there is an attached seal with inscriptions reading "Aurea Roma" along with a surrounding legend that states "Roma Caput Mundi Regit Orbis Frena Rotundi". Charles IV himself reigned from 1316 to 1378 and belonged to Luxembourg's House. This extraordinary manuscript holds immense historical value due to its representation of political history, serving as a contract or authority symbolizing Luxemburg's reign over Germany during that period. Displayed here by Bridgeman Images through Fine Art Finder, this print allows us to appreciate both its artistic beauty and historical importance.
