EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-coloured lithograph captures the intensity and significance of the "Terrific Combat Between the Monitor 2 Guns & Merrimac 11 Guns" that took place on March 9th, 1862, in Hampton Roads, Virginia. The artwork, created by Currier and Ives, now resides at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The image showcases a pivotal moment in naval warfare history - the clash between two ironclad warships: the Union's USS Monitor and the Confederate CSS Virginia (constructed from remnants of the USS Merrimack). This battle marked their first encounter in combat and was a crucial part of the Confederacy's attempt to break through Union blockades. In this scene, we witness an epic struggle as these formidable vessels engage each other amidst billowing smoke and churning waters. The smaller but technologically advanced Monitor valiantly challenges its larger adversary. It is said that during this engagement, David truly fought against Goliath. The impact of this historic confrontation cannot be overstated. With Norfolk and Richmond cut off by Union forces due to their blockade efforts, victory for either side would have significant consequences. Ultimately, it was the innovative design and resilience of USS Monitor that prevailed over CSS Virginia. As we gaze upon this remarkable print today, we are reminded not only of a thrilling battle but also of how technological advancements can shape military strategies forever.
