The King of Brobdingnag and Gulliver, pub. 1803

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This hand-coloured engraving by James Gillray takes us on a satirical journey through the pages of Jonathan Swift's iconic novel, Gulliver's Travels. In this whimsical depiction, George III assumes the role of the majestic ruler of the Brobdingnagians – a race of noble giants who abhor war. Napoleon Bonaparte, on the other hand, is humorously portrayed as Gulliver himself. The image showcases an array of symbolic elements that add depth to its political satire. The sovereign dons his bicorn hat and brandishes a sword while peering down at his diminutive foe through an eyeglass. Meanwhile, Napoleon stands in military uniform with tricolour cockade and plume adorning his head. Gillray masterfully captures both the physical contrast between these two historical figures and their opposing ideologies. While George III exudes imperial grandeur with his regal attire and commanding presence, Napoleon appears small in stature but not lacking in ambition. This print serves as a reminder that even great men can be belittled or dwarfed when placed within different contexts. Through this literary parody brought to life by Gillray's skilled hand, we are invited to reflect upon power dynamics and question our assumptions about size and significance. "The King of Brobdingnag and Gulliver" offers us a glimpse into an imaginative world where history meets fiction; where monarchs become caricatures; where emperors are reduced to midgets; all within the realm of political commentary disguised as artistry.
