EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Farmer (engraving)" takes us back to the 19th century, showcasing the industrious life of a farmer. The image, created by an English School artist, is part of a private collection and was originally featured in an illustrated vocabulary book for the deaf and dumb. In this scene, we witness the farmer engrossed in his work. His colter cuts through the earth as he meticulously prepares to sow seeds with a drill. Surrounding him are various tools essential to his trade: a manual Dutch hoe, pulverizer, besom, sieve, flail, harrow, hay rake - all meticulously arranged on shelves and hanging from walls. The farm itself exudes activity; livestock grazes peacefully nearby while other workmen operate machinery and tend to their respective tasks. A charming milking scene unfolds in one corner of the frame as another worker skillfully churns milk into butter using traditional implements. Transportation plays a crucial role on this bustling farm too; agricultural vehicles hitched up with mechanisms stand ready for use. Couplings connect these vehicles efficiently for seamless transportation across vast fields. This evocative snapshot offers us insight into Victorian-era farming practices and highlights not only the labor-intensive nature of agriculture but also its importance as an industry during that time period. It serves as a reminder of how far we have come in terms of technology and mechanization within farming today.
