EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment in time at Kandahar Airfield in 2010, showcasing the Sikorsky HH-60 MEDEVAC Black Hawk Helicopter being refueled. As an essential component of medical evacuation operations, this helicopter is specifically designed to transport wounded troops from the battlefield to safety. Built by Sikorsky Aircraft for the US Army, it stands as a symbol of hope and rescue amidst the chaos of war. Kandahar Airfield, located in Afghanistan's Kandahar Province, served as a crucial hub for combat operations conducted by the RAF from 2001 to 2014. A significant portion of this airfield was known as RAF Kandahar and played host to various aircraft operated by the RAF, Fleet Air Arm, and Army Air Corps. Serving as one end of the "Air Bridge" that originated from RAF Brize Norton in the UK, it facilitated transportation for ISAF airborne forces stationed there. Originally called Kandahar International Airport and situated approximately 10 miles southeast of Kandahar city, it not only functioned as Afghanistan's second international airport but also stood out as one of its largest military bases with ample space capable of accommodating over two hundred military aircraft. Through SAC Tim Laurence's lens, this print encapsulates both the bravery exhibited by those who serve on these helicopters and their unwavering commitment to saving lives on the front lines.
