RAF Chinook Helicopter at Camp Bastion, Afghanistan
A Royal Air Force Chinook helicopter from 1310 Flight at Camp Bastion, Afghanistan.
The RAF operates the largest fleet of Chinook support helicopters after the US Army and they have been operating in Afghanistan since late 2006.
As the most versatile workhorse of British air operations in theatre, the Chinook has been responsible for delivering personnel and essential supplies to forward operating and patrol bases across Helmand province.
They act as the Medical Emergency Response Team (MERT) helicopters for ISAF and Afghan casualty extraction, as well as deploying combat troops against narcotic facilities and insurgent strongholds.
Chinooks are used primarily for troop-carrying and for load-carrying (both internal and underslung) and can carry up to 54 troops or 10 tonnes of freight.
The cabin is large enough to accommodate two Land Rovers, while the three underslung load hooks allow a huge flexibility in the type and number of loads that can be carried.
Secondary roles include Search and Rescue and casualty evacuation (a total of 24 stretchers can be carried).
The crew consists of either two pilots, or a pilot and navigator, and two air loadmasters

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a Royal Air Force Chinook helicopter stationed at Camp Bastion, Afghanistan. As one of the largest fleets of Chinook support helicopters in the world, the RAF has been operating these powerful aircraft since late 2006. The versatility of the Chinook makes it an indispensable asset for British air operations in theater. It plays a vital role in delivering personnel and essential supplies to forward operating and patrol bases across Helmand province. Additionally, these helicopters serve as Medical Emergency Response Team (MERT) vehicles for both ISAF and Afghan casualty extraction. Not limited to transport duties alone, Chinooks are also deployed for combat missions against narcotic facilities and insurgent strongholds. With its impressive carrying capacity, this workhorse can accommodate up to 54 troops or haul up to 10 tonnes of freight internally or underslung. Furthermore, this formidable aircraft is equipped with three underslung load hooks that provide tremendous flexibility when transporting various types and quantities of cargo. The cabin's spaciousness allows it to comfortably house two Land Rovers while still leaving room for other equipment. In addition to troop transportation and load-carrying capabilities, Chinooks fulfill secondary roles such as Search and Rescue operations and casualty evacuation. Remarkably, they can accommodate up to 24 stretchers when necessary. With a crew consisting of either two pilots or a pilot-navigator duo alongside two air loadmasters, these RAF Chinooks exemplify excellence in military aviation prowess.
