Loco Exe on the Lynton & Barnstable Railway c. 1933
Loco " Exe" is seen at Pilton Yard with carriage stock. The loco is in intermediate livery which was applied between 1927/29.
This line of 1ft 11.5in gauge was opened in 1898 and closed in 1935. The railway was sold to the LSWR in 1923b by which time the LSWR was part of the Southern Railway. Unfortunately the improvements carried out by the SR were fruitless in the face of road competition and following the closure of the line the assets were auctioned off

EDITORS COMMENTS
Step back in time to the early 1930s with this print of 'Loco Exe' on the Lynton & Barnstable Railway. Captured at Pilton Yard, the locomotive stands proudly amidst a collection of carriage stock. Its striking intermediate livery, applied between 1927 and 1929, adds a touch of elegance to its already impressive presence. The Lynton & Barnstable Railway, boasting a narrow gauge of just 1ft 11.5in, first opened its tracks in 1898 but sadly met its closure in 1935. Prior to its demise, the railway was acquired by the London and South Western Railway (LSWR) in 1923 when it became part of the Southern Railway network. Despite efforts made by SR to modernize and improve services along this picturesque route, it ultimately succumbed to fierce competition from road transportation. Preserved within the Ronald Shephard Collection at West Sussex Record Office, this print offers us a glimpse into an era long gone. The exquisite details captured here tell stories of resilience and innovation that once thrived upon these rails. As we admire Loco Exe against the backdrop of Pilton Yard's bustling activity, let us remember not only its historical significance but also acknowledge those who dedicated their lives to keeping our railways alive. This remarkable image serves as a poignant reminder that even though some chapters may close forever, their legacy lives on through photographs like these.
