EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the historic moment when the "Green Goddess" arrived at New Romney in 1926, marking a significant milestone for the Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway. Designed by renowned Railways Engineer Henry Greenly, this locomotive was one of five pacific locomotives delivered to the railway. Its striking resemblance to the LNER A1 Pacifics, which had made their debut just five years earlier, added to its allure. Crafted with utmost precision and skill by Davey Paxman of Colchester, these locomotives were a testament to engineering excellence. The "Green Goddess" stood out among her counterparts as she gracefully traversed the tracks on her maiden journey. Preserved within the Ronald Shephard Collection and housed at West Sussex Record Office, this remarkable photograph offers a glimpse into an era defined by innovation and progress in rail transportation. The intricate details captured in this image reflect not only the technical prowess involved but also pay homage to those who dedicated their expertise towards shaping our railway heritage. As we admire this snapshot frozen in time, let us appreciate how it symbolizes human ingenuity and serves as a reminder of our collective commitment to preserving history for future generations. May it continue to inspire awe and fascination while reminding us of our rich industrial past.
