Section through leaf of marram grass
Marram grass leaf. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a transverse section through a leaf of marram grass, Ammophila arenaria. The leaf surface (epidermis) is covered in a dense wax, which protects the plant against drying conditions. The upper surface of the leaf is highly grooved and covered with single-celled hairs. These hairs are to discourage foraging animals and also reduce air currents and so help prevent evaporation. At the base of each fold is a round vascular bundle containing xylem vessels (large oval spaces) and smaller phloem cells used to transport water and food through the leaf. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a detailed section through the leaf of marram grass, Ammophila arenaria. The colored scanning electron micrograph (SEM) reveals the intricate features that make this plant so remarkable. The leaf surface, known as the epidermis, is coated with a dense wax layer that serves as a protective shield against harsh drying conditions. As we explore further, we notice that the upper surface of the leaf is adorned with numerous grooves and covered in single-celled hairs. These tiny hairs not only discourage foraging animals but also play a crucial role in reducing air currents to minimize evaporation. At the base of each fold within this fascinating structure lies a round vascular bundle containing xylem vessels and smaller phloem cells. These specialized cells are responsible for transporting water and nutrients throughout the leaf, ensuring its survival and growth. With magnifications reaching up to x110 at 5x7 inches size or x46 at 5x7 centimeters size, this mesmerizing image allows us to appreciate nature's intricate design on an entirely new level. It beautifully captures the delicate balance between form and function found within marram grass leaves. This stunning photograph from Science Photo Library invites us into the world of botany, showcasing both its scientific significance and aesthetic beauty without mentioning any commercial use or company affiliation.
