Perspective view of Hurricane Allen from space
Computer-generated perspective view of Hurricane Allen, seen over the Gulf of Mexico on 8 August 1980. The image was produced from two TIROS-N satellite images, one taken in visible light, the other in the infrared (at a wavelength of 11 microns). A computer uses the two data sets to calculate the heights of the cloud tops and to create a 3-D computer model of the storm. A 2-D image can then be generated, viewing the hurricane from any chosen height and angle. 10 -- damaged

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a mesmerizing perspective view of Hurricane Allen, captured from space. The image, generated through advanced computer technology, allows us to witness the sheer power and magnitude of this severe storm as it looms over the Gulf of Mexico on 8 August 1980. To create this stunning visual representation, two satellite images from TIROS-N were utilized - one in visible light and the other in infrared at an 11-micron wavelength. By analyzing these data sets, a computer was able to calculate the heights of the cloud tops and construct a remarkable three-dimensional model of the hurricane. The result is an awe-inspiring two-dimensional image that enables viewers to observe Hurricane Allen from any chosen height and angle. This unique perspective offers valuable insights into extreme weather phenomena while highlighting the incredible capabilities of modern image processing techniques. As we gaze upon this breathtaking photograph, we are reminded of both nature's immense beauty and its potential for devastation. It serves as a testament to humankind's continuous efforts in meteorology and climate science to better understand and predict such severe storms. This extraordinary print by Science Photo Library not only captures our imagination but also provides invaluable scientific knowledge about hurricanes like Allen – their structure, behavior, and impact on our planet's delicate ecosystem.
