John Aubrey, English archaeologist

John Aubrey (1626-97), English archaeologist, biographer and a founder of the Royal Society. Aubrey made the first scientific study of Stonehenge, England, and proposed the idea that it had been a Druid temple, he also rediscovered the stone circle at Avebury. Aubrey studied the natural history of Wiltshire and was the first person to propose making a geological map, though he himself never made one. Knowing many famous men of his time, including William Harvey, he gave accounts of them in his Brief Lives, which was published posthumously in e1813
