1731 Scheuchzer Creation 3rd day plants

1731 Physica Sacra (Sacred Physics) by Johann Scheuchzer (1672-1733) folio copper engraving of the third day of creation (plants) drawn by a team of engravers under the direction of Johann Andreas Pfeffel (1674-1748). " Let the earth put forth vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind, upon the earth". The goal of Scheuchzers work was to use the best contemporary science to illuminate the biblical account of human history in a sequence of 745 plates. At the time there was little doubt that science (physica) supported the literal truth of the Biblical chronology of creation and history. Black and white version also available in collection

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a folio copper engraving from the renowned 1731 Physica Sacra (Sacred Physics) by Johann Scheuchzer. The image depicts the third day of creation, specifically focusing on plants. Meticulously drawn by a team of skilled engravers under the guidance of Johann Andreas Pfeffel, this artwork beautifully captures the biblical account of God's command for vegetation to flourish on Earth. Scheuchzer's ultimate objective was to employ contemporary scientific knowledge to shed light on human history as described in the Bible through an impressive sequence of 745 plates. During that era, there existed little skepticism regarding science's support for the literal truth behind both creation and historical events outlined in religious texts. The black and white version of this masterpiece is also available within this collection. This awe-inspiring illustration encompasses various elements such as farming, cultivation, entomology, and different species of plants. It serves as a visual testament to how science and religion intertwined harmoniously during that period. Paul D. Stewart has skillfully captured the essence and significance of this historic artwork through his lens at Science Photo Library. This print not only celebrates Scheuchzer's dedication but also invites viewers into a world where artistry meets faith and scientific inquiry intertwines with divine narratives.
