EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a satirical artwork titled "A French Physician with his Retinue going to Visit His Patients". Created by the Swiss artist Michel-Vincent Brandoin in the 18th century, this engraving was later reproduced by Caldwell in London in 1771. The scene depicts a French doctor being transported in a carriage at the center of attention, accompanied by an assistant carrying an enema syringe (clyster) on the right. On the left side stands an apothecary with his loyal dog. The historical significance of this piece is highlighted as it was featured in Eugen Hollander's book "Die Karikatur und Satire in der Medizin" (Caricature and Satire in Medicine) published in 1921. This intriguing artwork showcases not only the transportation methods used during that era but also provides insight into medical practices and societal norms of the time. With its detailed illustration and thought-provoking satire, this print offers viewers a glimpse into European history, specifically British-French relations. It serves as a reminder of how art can be used to caricaturize professions like medicine while shedding light on cultural nuances and social dynamics prevalent during that period. This remarkable piece from Science Photo Library invites us to appreciate both its artistic value and historical context, allowing us to reflect on how far we have come since then while recognizing our roots in centuries-old traditions.
