Maiden Castle

Maiden Castle. Aerial photograph of Maiden Castle, the largest hill fort in Britain. The dimensions of the fort are truly impressive, even after 2000 years of erosion the ramparts are still around 6m high in some places. The whole fort covers an area of 18.8 hectares. Evidence from archaelogical remains found at the site indicate that is was first occupied in the late Stone Age/Early Bronze Age (circa 3000BC) though the hill fort acquired its present dimensions in the Iron Age (circa 350BC). The Romans captured the fort in circa AD 43. Photographed near Dorchester, Dorset, UK

Despite over 2000 years of erosion, the ramparts still stand tall at around 6 meters high in certain areas, a testament to its historical significance. Encompassing an expansive area of 18.8 hectares, this ancient fort holds evidence of occupation dating back to the late Stone Age and Early Bronze Age around 3000BC. However, it was during the Iron Age circa 350BC that Maiden Castle acquired its current dimensions. The Romans later captured this formidable stronghold around AD 43. Located near Dorchester in Dorset, UK, this print captures not only a stunning countryside scenery but also offers a glimpse into our rich archaeological heritage. The image highlights the intricate earthworks and remains that make up this prehistoric fortress. Its historical importance is further emphasized by mentioning English Heritage's involvement in preserving such sites for future generations to appreciate. This fascinating snapshot provides viewers with an opportunity to delve into British history and marvel at the ingenuity of our ancestors who constructed such remarkable defensive structures on these ridges and ramparts.
