Because Ilford fire-women who are competing in a tug-o

Because Ilford fire-women who are competing in a tug-o -war tournament in Walthamstow on Whit Monday have no team with which to practise, they carry out their training on a piece of waste ground near their station with the aid of a " Heath Robinson" apparatus.
This novel device consists of a miscellaneous collection of articles, including a motor axle, dust bins and buckets filled with cement, which are suspended from scaffolding poles by means of ropes and pulleys.
When the girls start pulling, up go these improvised weights, borrowed from a neigbouring scrap
heap. A fireman who is interested in their training acts as an extra weight and as he shoots up gets an idea of the constistency of their heaves.
The team is representative of all branches of the National Fire Service (NFS) and equally varied were the professions of these girls in peacetime.
Ruth Wilkinson was a window cleaner, Holder Hunter a private secretary, Minnie Coblentz a book-keeper and Alice Doyle a statistical clerk.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the determination and resourcefulness of the Ilford fire-women as they prepare for a tug-of-war tournament in Walthamstow on Whit Monday. Lacking a dedicated team to practice with, these fierce firefighters have found an ingenious solution – a "Heath Robinson" apparatus set up on a piece of waste ground near their station. The contraption is a hodgepodge of items, including a motor axle, dust bins, and buckets filled with cement, all suspended from scaffolding poles using ropes and pulleys. As the girls begin pulling, these makeshift weights ascend into the air, borrowed from a neighboring scrap heap. To gauge their strength and progress, an interested fireman acts as an extra weight that shoots up alongside them. Representing various branches of the National Fire Service (NFS), this diverse team showcases women from different professions during peacetime. Ruth Wilkinson was once a window cleaner while Holder Hunter worked as a private secretary. Minnie Coblentz excelled as a bookkeeper and Alice Doyle served as a statistical clerk. Taken by photographer George Greenwell on May 10th, 1944 in London's Walthamstow district, this picture immortalizes these brave female firefighters in action during their rigorous training session. Their dedication to honing their skills despite limited resources serves as an inspiration even today.
