West Bromwich Albion Players Strike, 1st January 1964.
manager Jimmy Hagan during the strike.
Compromise was eventually established between the disciplinarian manager and his squad when it was announced the players would be allowed to wear tracksuit bottoms to warm up in but not during sessions themselves. There was an ironic twist around the same time when Hagan pressed the wrong pedal while trying to depart the training ground and hurtled 40ft down a steep bank into the adjacent canal. Several of his players saved him from an icy death but, on hearing puffing and panting during the rescue mission, the Sheffield United legend reportedly told one of them: YouOre not fit.....extra training this afternoon!"

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the history of West Bromwich Albion, dating back to January 1st, 1964. The image showcases manager Jimmy Hagan during the infamous West Bromwich Albion Players Strike. During this period, tensions between Hagan and his squad reached a boiling point due to disciplinary issues. However, after intense negotiations and discussions, a compromise was finally reached. It was agreed that the players would be permitted to wear tracksuit bottoms during warm-up sessions but not during training itself. This compromise aimed to address both parties' concerns while maintaining discipline within the team. Interestingly enough, around the same time as these negotiations took place, an ironic twist occurred involving Hagan himself. While attempting to depart from the training ground, he accidentally pressed the wrong pedal and found himself hurtling down a steep bank into an adjacent canal. Fortunately for him, several of his loyal players came to his rescue and saved him from what could have been an icy demise. In true football fashion, even amidst such circumstances, Hagan's dedication remained unwavering. As he heard panting and puffing during his rescue mission, he reportedly told one of his players: "You're not fit. . . extra training this afternoon!" showcasing his commitment to keeping them in top form. This remarkable photograph by Bill Ellman provides us with a glimpse into both the tumultuous relationship between manager and players at that time as well as their unwavering loyalty when it mattered most.
