EDITORS COMMENTS
"This stunning print depicts the Dutch painter Willem van de Velde the Elder (1611-1693), a prominent figure in the Dutch Golden Age of art. Van de Velde is best known for his innovative and meticulously detailed marine paintings, which captured the essence of the sea and its ever-changing moods. Born in Leiden, Van de Velde was initially trained as a tapestry designer before turning to painting. He studied under the renowned artist Hendrick Goltzius and later specialised in marine art under the guidance of Cornelis Norbertus Gysbrechts. Van de Velde's mastery of the sea and its elements was unparalleled, and he was a favorite among Dutch merchants and nobility. The present print captures Van de Velde in his studio, surrounded by his works and tools. He is shown in a thoughtful pose, deep in concentration as he paints a marine scene on a large canvas. The print also reveals a glimpse of his extensive collection of reference materials, including charts, books, and models. Van de Velde's influence on marine painting was profound, and his works continue to inspire artists and collectors alike. This print is a testament to his enduring legacy and the beauty and depth of his art." Credit: Willem van de Velde the Elder in his Studio, Mary Evans Picture Library, London. (Ref: MEPL/MAR/142339)
