EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcolored copperplate stipple engraving, created between 1816 and 1830, showcases two iconic bird species: the White Stork (Ciconia ciconia) and the Jabiru (Jabiru mycteria). The illustration is taken from the esteemed "Dictionnaire de Sciences Naturelles: Ornithologie" by Frederic Cuvier, published in Paris, France. The artwork was produced under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin and features the illustration by Jean Gabriel Pretre, a renowned painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo and later the artist to the Museum of Natural History. The White Stork is depicted standing tall with its distinctive long legs and neck, while its wings are spread wide as if ready for flight. Its white plumage and black wingtips make it an easily recognizable bird species. The Jabiru, on the other hand, is shown with its long, S-shaped neck and distinctive down-curved bill. This large wading bird is native to South America and is known for its ability to catch fish and other aquatic prey. The intricate details of the feathers and textures of the birds are beautifully rendered in this stipple engraving, a technique that involves the use of tiny dots to create shading and depth. The handcoloring adds an extra layer of vibrancy and realism to the image, making it a stunning representation of these two remarkable bird species.
