EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait of Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson (1824-1863) was painted by J.W. King in 1864, during the height of the American Civil War. Jackson, a Confederate General, earned his nickname "Stonewall" for his unyielding leadership and tactical brilliance at the First Battle of Manassas in 1861. In this image, Jackson's stern, focused expression and piercing blue eyes convey a sense of determination and resolve. His neatly trimmed beard, buttoned jacket, and three gold stars on his collar indicate his high military rank. The light and shadow play on his profile, illuminating the subtle details of his face, including the creases around his eyes and nose, adding to the portrait's lifelike quality. Jackson's military career was marked by a series of impressive victories, but his life was tragically cut short when he was accidentally shot by his own men during the Battle of Chancellorsville in 1863. Despite his untimely death, Jackson remains a revered figure in American military history. This portrait, now housed in the National Portrait Gallery in Washington D.C., offers a glimpse into the past, providing a tangible connection to the complex and tumultuous history of the United States during the 19th century.
