Senegal - The rebellion at Thies - Meissa Tabara

The circumstances surrounding the outbreak of the Thies rebellion remain obscure. An article at the time said that the rebellion began after the sentencing to 15 days in jail of Diery Fall. He did not accept the charge and with associates, attacked and killed a young colonial officer, Monsieur Chautemps. Two days later, Diery Fall was caught and killed by his own brother who cut off his head and forearm to bring the Pouvergue administrator who had them exposed publicly as a warning and intimidation. Another assassin, Sarithia Dieye was caught a few days later at St. Mary of Bathurst in Gambia. All that remains of this dramatic episode are these remarkable postcards. After being caught on camera, Canar Fall (head of Western Baol province), his brother (Meissa Tabara, pictured here) and " courtiers" were all deported to Guyana. Date: 1904

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures Meissa Tabara, a key figure in the Thies Rebellion of 1904 in Senegal. The circumstances surrounding the outbreak of this rebellion remain shrouded in mystery, with various accounts attributing its cause to the sentencing of Diery Fall to 15 days in jail. Fall, who did not accept the charge, allegedly attacked and killed a young colonial officer, Monsieur Chautemps, in retaliation. Two days later, Fall was caught and killed by his own brother, Meissa Tabara, who brought the Pouvergue administrator the officer's head and forearm as a warning and intimidation. Meissa Tabara, the head of the Western Baol province, and other associates, including Sarithia Dieye, were all deported to Guyana following the rebellion. In this image, Meissa Tabara is depicted wearing a traditional Senegalese robe and turban, his expression intense and resolute. The photograph offers a glimpse into the complex and often tumultuous history of French colonial rule in West Africa during the early 20th century. The Thies Rebellion, a dramatic episode in the annals of Senegalese history, serves as a reminder of the profound impact of colonialism on African societies and the resistance that often emerged in response to it.
