EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in 1905, offers a glimpse into the artistic hub of Rossetti Studios at 72 Flood Street in the heart of Chelsea, London. The studios, designed and built by Edward Holland around 1896, were purpose-built to accommodate a community of painters, designers, and photographers. By 1904, two of the seven studios had been rented by renowned artists Augustus John and William Orpen. In this image, we see the bustling scene outside the studios, with children playing on the pavement and adults going about their day. The studios' artistic influence extends beyond their walls, as evidenced by the hats and fashionable attire of the passersby. In 1905, Orpen and John established Chelsea Art School in the studios, with separate spaces for boys and girls. This innovative educational institution further solidified the studios' reputation as a creative haven. The brick facade of Rossetti Studios, with its large windows and simple design, has remained largely unchanged since its construction. The studios continue to be used by artists to this day, making it an essential part of London's rich artistic history. This photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, capturing the vibrant energy and creativity that has long defined Rossetti Studios.
