EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving, taken from Jussieus Dictionary of Natural Science published in Florence, Italy in 1837, showcases two remarkable birds of prey native to the Americas: the Osprey (Pandion haliaetus) and the Caracara (Caracara plancus). The Osprey, depicted with its distinctive hooked beak and broad, wings spread wide, is a master of the aquatic environment. It is a fish-eating bird, with the unique ability to rotate its talons to grip its prey underwater. The Caracara, on the other hand, is a ground-dwelling bird of prey, with a more varied diet that includes reptiles, amphibians, and small mammals. Its distinctive crest and fan-like tail feathers add to its striking appearance. The illustration was produced by the skilled hands of Jean Gabriel Pretre, a French naturalist and artist, with the engraving expertly executed by Cignozzi under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin. Batelli e Figli, a renowned publishing house in Florence, published this beautiful work of art. This image offers a glimpse into the natural world of the past, providing a window into the diverse and intriguing wildlife that once inhabited the Americas.
