EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithograph illustration from the late 1890s showcases a collection of exquisite donations to a post-war charity bazaar in the Middle East. The image is a testament to the rich cultural patronage and international goodwill during a time of need. The centerpiece of the display is a Catalogue illustration, meticulously detailing each item and its respective donor. The collection includes a flower vase and candlestick, made in Berlin and donated by the German Emperor. The imperial touch is also evident in the Louis XV display cabinet, decorated with bronze and gold, a generous contribution from the Austro-Hungarian Emperor. Austria's capital city, Vienna, is represented by a stunning porcelain vase, also donated by the Austro-Hungarian Emperor. The Eastern influence is evident in the embroidered cover in turquoise and gold, a gracious gift from the Sultan. The collection also includes a ceremonial saddle in velvet, red and silver, donated by Abraham Pacha, a civil servant and diplomat. The Turkish revenue board contributed a large vase in bronze and gold to the bazaar. The illustration reflects the ornate design and Arabic script typical of the Ottoman Empire during the reign of Abdul Hamid II. The charity bazaar served as a platform for raising funds for wounded soldiers and their families, providing much-needed aid to victims of the ongoing war. This chromolithograph serves as a poignant reminder of the power of international solidarity and the beauty of diverse cultural contributions.
