EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait depicts Gaius Iulius Verus Maximus, also known as Gaius Julius Verus Maximinus or Maximinus the Younger, who ruled as Roman Emperor from 235 to 238 AD. The image is a copperplate engraving taken from Abraham Bogaerts' De Roomsche Monarchy, published in Utrecht in 1697 by Francois Salm. Maximinus was born in Africa and rose through the ranks of the Roman military, eventually becoming Emperor following the assassination of Gordian III and the suicide of Pupienus and Balbinus. During his reign, Maximinus focused on military campaigns to defend the empire against external threats, particularly the Germanic tribes. Maximinus is depicted here wearing the imperial purple robe and diadem, symbolizing his imperial power. His stern expression and piercing gaze convey a sense of determination and strength, fitting for a leader who faced numerous challenges during his reign. The inscription at the bottom of the print identifies Maximinus as 'Gordian Caesar, Marcus Antonius Gordianus Sempronianus Romanus Africanus.' This indicates his various titles and lineages, reflecting the complex political landscape of the Roman Empire during this period. Overall, this portrait offers a glimpse into the visual representation of imperial power during the late Roman Empire and the enduring legacy of the Caesars and Kaisers.
