EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored steel engraving depicts the European nettle tree, Celtis australis, also known as the Mediterranean hackberry, lote tree, or honeyberry, and micocoulier. The illustration was created by Edouard Maubert and engraved by Oudet for the horticultural and botanical publication "La Regne Vegetal: Planets Agricoles et Forestieres," published by Pierre Oscar Reveil, A. Dupuis, Fr. Gerard, and Francois Herincqs in Paris between 1864 and 1871. The European nettle tree is a small to medium-sized tree native to the Mediterranean region, with a distinctive, irregularly shaped crown and smooth, gray bark. Its leaves are alternate, simple, and nettle-shaped, hence the common name. The tree is also known for its small, edible fruits, which are rich in antioxidants and have a sweet, honey-like taste. The European nettle tree is an important component of Mediterranean forests and woodlands, providing food and shelter for various wildlife species. It is also valued for its medicinal properties, particularly for its astringent and anti-inflammatory effects. This beautiful engraving captures the intricate details of the European nettle tree's leaves, bark, and fruits, offering a glimpse into the natural beauty and diversity of the Mediterranean region during the late 19th century. The meticulous hand-coloring adds depth and vibrancy to the image, making it a stunning addition to any botanical or horticultural collection.
