EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured steel engraving depicts Dyers Madder, or Common Madder, Rubia tinctorum, also known as Garance. The botanical illustration was created by Edouard Maubert and engraved by Oudet for the horticultural and botanical publication "La Regne Vegetal: Planets Agricoles et Forestieres," published by Pierre Oscar Reveil, A. Dupuis, Fr. Gerard, and Francois Herincqs between 1864 and 1871. Dyers Madder is a perennial herb native to Europe, Asia, and the Mediterranean. It has been used for centuries for its vibrant red dye, which was once an essential colorant for textiles, cosmetics, and food. The plant's roots contain the alkaloid rubian, which reacts with iron to produce the red pigment. The intricately detailed engraving captures the beauty of the Madder plant in all its glory. The illustration shows the plant in its entirety, from its sprawling roots to its lobed leaves and delicate flowers. The handcolouring adds depth and vibrancy to the image, bringing out the rich red hues of the plant's roots and the intricate veining on its leaves. This botanical illustration is a testament to the meticulous attention to detail and artistic skill of the time. It provides a glimpse into the natural world and the scientific curiosity that drove botanists and illustrators to document and preserve the beauty of the natural world for future generations. The engraving is also a reminder of the importance of natural dyes in the history of textile production and the role they played in shaping the fashion industry.
