Born in 1573 in Florence, Italy, Marie was the eldest daughter of the powerful and wealthy Cosimo II de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany. Her marriage to Henri IV in 1600 was a strategic alliance designed to strengthen the political ties between France and Tuscany. Marie was known for her intelligence, beauty, and strong personality. She was a patron of the arts, sciences, and literature, and her court was renowned for its elegance and refinement. In this engraving, Marie is depicted in the height of Renaissance fashion, wearing a richly embroidered gown adorned with pearls and other precious stones. Her elaborate headdress, consisting of a veil and a diadem, further emphasizes her regal status.
