Born in Havana in 1853, Martí dedicated his life to the cause of Cuban independence from Spanish rule. He wrote passionate poetry that reflected his deep love for his homeland and his longing for freedom. His words inspired many Cubans to join the struggle against Spanish colonialism. Martí also played a key role in organizing military campaigns against the Spanish, leading troops into battle in 1895. Despite his military successes, Martí was ultimately killed in action on May 19, 1895, at the age of 42.
