EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures a young and handsome Prince Albert, Duke of York, later to become King George VI of England, in his military uniform from 1922. The Duke, who was born on December 14, 1895, is shown here in the rank of Colonel in the Grenadier Guards, a position he held from 1910 until his accession to the throne in 1936. The image, taken by renowned British photographer, Vandyk, in 1922, offers a glimpse into the Duke's regal bearing and military prowess. At the time, the Duke was the second in line to the throne, following his father, King George V. The photograph is a testament to the Duke's dedication to his military duties, as well as his commitment to upholding the traditions of the British monarchy. The Duke's uniform, adorned with various decorations and insignia, reflects his long and distinguished military career. Notably, he is wearing the Star of the Order of the Garter, the highest order of chivalry in the United Kingdom, which was bestowed upon him by his father in 1917. This photograph holds significant historical value, as it captures the Duke in the years leading up to his unexpected ascension to the throne following the death of his brother, Edward VIII, in 1936. George VI went on to reign from 1936 until his own death in 1952, during which time he led the country through World War II and oversaw the gradual transition of the monarchy into the modern era. Overall, this photograph of George VI as Duke of York in 1922 is a fascinating glimpse into the life of a future monarch, showcasing his military accomplishments and regal presence.
