Gates to Alexandra Palace Park and Airship pilot Dr Barton

An absolutely fascinating postcard showing the gates to Alexandra Palace Park and Airship pilot Dr Francis Alexander Barton (1861-1939), who made a successful flight on 24th July, 1905. Three years earlier he made a balloon at Alexandra Palace and on 9th August 1902, on the occasion of King Edward VIIs Coronation, ascended in it from Beckenham, accompanied by a Frenchman called M. Auguste Eugine Gaudron. Packets of stamped postcards were thrown out of the car at various points. The balloon was carried over the Channel and came down in the sea just off the French coast; and Barton claimed that on that flight he was the first man in England to carry mails by air! (see also 10997539 for this card set in as an insert to another postcard!) Date: 1905

EDITORS COMMENTS
This postcard image depicts the grand gates leading to Alexandra Palace Park in London, with an intriguing addition: Airship pilot Dr Francis Alexander Barton (1861-1939), standing proudly in his uniform and cap before the entrance. The year is 1905, and Dr Barton had recently made a successful airship flight on July 24th of that year. However, this wasn't his first foray into aviation. Three years earlier, in 1902, he made a daring balloon ascent from Alexandra Palace, accompanied by Frenchman M. Auguste Eugene Gaudron, on the occasion of King Edward VII's coronation. During this flight, they carried packets of stamped postcards and became the first in England to attempt airmail. Their balloon, filled with hydrogen, crossed the English Channel and landed in the sea off the French coast. Dr Barton's innovative spirit and pioneering achievements in aviation are commemorated in this impressive postcard, which showcases the wrought iron gates of Alexandra Palace Park's entrance and the railings adorned with signs. A true testament to the spirit of exploration and progress, this postcard is a fascinating glimpse into the history of aviation and its early pioneers.
