This striking photograph captures Frederick Roberts, 1st Earl Roberts (1832-1914), an Anglo-Irish soldier and one of the most distinguished military commanders of the Victorian era. Roberts is depicted here in full dress uniform, adorned with an impressive array of medals earned during his illustrious career, particularly in the African wars. At the time this image was taken, Roberts served as Colonel-in-Chief of the Forces from Overseas, a position he held at the onset of World War I. Tragically, Roberts contracted pneumonia while visiting Indian troops fighting at the front and passed away on 14th November 1914 in St Omer, France.
