EDITORS COMMENTS
St. Olav's Church, also known as Olavikirk in Estonian, is a historic Protestant church located in the heart of Tallinn, Estonia's capital city. This stunning photograph captures the breathtaking view towards the church, which stands proudly against the backdrop of the vibrant and colorful rooftops of Tallinn's Old Town. The church, with its distinctive red spire, has been an integral part of Estonian history for over 700 years. Originally built in the late 13th century as a Catholic church, St. Olav's was one of the largest and most impressive structures in medieval Tallinn. However, during the Reformation in the 16th century, the church was transformed into a Lutheran place of worship. The church's intricate Gothic architecture, which includes beautiful stained glass windows and ornate stone carvings, is a testament to the rich history of Estonia and its cultural heritage. The church is named after St. Olav, the patron saint of Norway, who is said to have visited Tallinn in the 11th century. According to legend, St. Olav miraculously healed a sick boy in Tallinn, and in gratitude, the boy's father built a small chapel in the saint's honor. Over the centuries, the chapel grew into the magnificent church that stands today. Despite the many challenges that Estonia has faced throughout its history, including occupation by various foreign powers, St. Olav's Church has remained a symbol of resilience and hope for the Estonian people. Today, it is a popular tourist destination and a place of worship for many, drawing visitors from around the world who are drawn to its historic beauty and spiritual significance.
