EDITORS COMMENTS
This watercolor and pencil sketch, dated circa 1958, depicts a proposed design for a Mess dress by the esteemed British fashion designer Sir Norman Hartnell. The design features a dark green, full-length dress with an upright collar and three-quarter length sleeves. The collar is adorned with Captain's silver rank badges, adding a touch of sophistication and authority. The dress boasts white lapels and white tabs on the sleeves, creating a striking contrast against the deep green fabric. The left side of the dress is gathered and features a scarlet bow at the waist, adding a feminine touch to the otherwise formal attire. Completing the design is an eight-point star, adding an intricate and elegant detail. Sir Norman Hartnell, a renowned fashion designer of the time, signed the sketch at the bottom, attesting to its authenticity and provenance. The design, however, was not adopted for use, leaving us to wonder what might have been had it been brought to life. This beautiful and intricately detailed sketch is a testament to Sir Norman Hartnell's exceptional talent and creativity in fashion design.
