EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite 14th century miniature, found on folio 66v of the Missale Dominicale cum Kalendario (Codex 98) housed in the Chapter Archive of Tarazona, Spain, depicts a poignant scene from the New Testament: the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ. The central figure is Jesus, his body taut with the weight of the cross, his eyes closed in agony as he breathes his last breath. To his right stands the Virgin Mary, her face etched with sorrow and despair, her hands raised in prayer. To Jesus' left, Mary Magdalene, with tears streaming down her face, reaches out to touch his foot in a gesture of love and devotion. This intricately detailed scene, painted on a small folio, offers a glimpse into the deep emotional resonance of the Passion narrative during the Middle Ages. The Missale Dominicale cum Kalendario was a liturgical book used in the celebration of the Mass, and its illustrations served to bring the stories of the Bible to life for the medieval Christian community. This miniature, with its powerful depiction of the Crucifixion, is a testament to the enduring power of art to evoke emotion and inspire faith.
